Ride-share activities (like driving for Uber, Lyft, etc.) are not fully covered by a standard personal auto insurance policy.
Personal auto insurance covers personal use of your vehicle. It typically will not cover driving for a ride-share company once the app is on. If you get into an accident while ride-sharing, your personal insurer may deny the claim and even cancel your policy if they didn’t know you were driving for a ride-share.
Ride-Share Company Coverage
Most companies like Uber and Lyft offer some level of insurance, but it depends on the part of the drive you’re in. If the App is off, you don’t have ride-share coverage & your personal auto policy applies.
However, when the App is on & waiting for a ride request, Uber/Lyft provide limited liability coverage but no collision or comprehensive unless you have ride-share coverage on your personal policy.
Once a passenger is in the car, Uber/Lyft provide $1 million liability coverage, and contingent collision/comprehensive, but only if you also have those coverages on your personal policy.
Also, many insurers now offer a ride-share endorsement you can add to your personal policy. This will fill the coverage gap in and may coordinate better with Uber/Lyft coverage.
Contact OHL Insurance and Financial Services if you drive ride-share in Manor Pennsylvania & Glendale Arizona and ask about ride-share endorsements. It’s also a good idea to understand Uber/Lyft’s policy details (each may differ slightly).
